...New 12Z Aviation Discussion...

.SHORT TERM...
(Today through Monday)
Issued at 226 AM EDT Sun Jul 6 2025

Key Messages:

    - Dry for most through Monday. Isolated to scattered
thunderstorms are possible across eastern Georgia today and
far north and south central Georgia tomorrow.

    - Highs remain in the upper 80s to mid-90s today (upper 70s to
80s for the mountains), and just a few degrees warmer
      tomorrow.

Discussion:

With weak ridging aloft for the eastern half of CONUS, the catalyst
for sensible weather to round off the weekend will be Tropical
Storm Chantal. While the forecast track keeps it well to our east
as it continues to nose inland across South Carolina later this
afternoon, the surge in moisture -- PWATs of 1.5" or greater --
associated with it will bring chances for thunderstorms to
portions of the area today. Subsidence (and thus drying) are
hallmarks of the northeasterly flow channeling into area on the
western periphery of the system, so much of the western and
central portions of the forecast area are likely to remain rain-
free. For today, expect isolated thunderstorm development during
the afternoon, primarily for areas to the south and east of a
line extending from Macon to Athens, tapering off in the few hours
surrounding sunset. Instability will be on the lower side (by
summer standards), so not expecting much in the way of severe
storm activity.

As we start the work week on Monday, a mid-level shortwave will
sweep across the Midwest, eventually phasing with what remains of
Chantal. This, in combination with a lingering baroclinic zone along
the northern Gulf, will support chances for isolated thunderstorm
development once again for northern and south central Georgia
during the afternoon and evening.

Highs today and tomorrow will be in the upper 80s to upper-90s. As
moisture begins to return with exiting subsidence, expect heat index
values to begin to creep back toward (and potentially exceed by a
degree or two) the century mark on Monday, especially for the
eastern half of the forecast area. Lows will drop into the 60s to
mid-70s.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday night through Saturday)
Issued at 226 AM EDT Sun Jul 6 2025

Key Messages:

- Hot and humid through the week (hello, July).

- Diurnally-driven showers and storms each day.

Discussion:

A quasi-zonal/weakly trough-y pattern will be in place in the mid-
levels and upper-levels through the long term period. As what is
currently Tropical Storm Chantal shifts northward and dissipates/is
absorbed into the westerlies on Tuesday, tropical moisture will
continue to be channeled inland over the Southeast, courtesy of the
Bermuda High placement. Isolated to scattered diurnally-driven
showers and storms are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Ensemble guidance depicts a slight uptick in PWATs (with values
maxing out around 2.0") on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, mainly
across the southern portion of the CWA. PoPs are greatest during
this time frame as a result -- 60% or greater. Any weak disturbances
traversing the mid-/upper-level flow over the Ohio/Tennessee River
Valley could amplify the coverage/intensity of daily convection. In
true Georgia summertime fashion, a few storms each day could be
strong to severe, with gusty to localized damaging winds, heavy
rainfall, and frequent lightning. In addition to disturbances aloft,
mesoscale features like cloud cover/differential heating and outflow
boundaries from earlier convection will govern where exactly storm
development is favored each day. Generally speaking, the potential
for widespread/organized severe weather remains low.

Temperatures and humidity will bear watching Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday. Highs in the mid-/upper-90s and dew points in the lower-
/mid-70s are progged to push heat index values to 105-108 degrees
mainly across portions of central and eastern Georgia, with isolated
locales potentially hitting 110 degrees. Heat Advisories would be
needed for such values that are expected to last at least an hour.
That said, daily showers and thunderstorms -- and resulting cloud
cover -- could prevent said heat index values from being realized in
some areas.
