Key Messages:

    - A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of northeast
      and east central Georgia on Saturday afteroon. Heat index
      values as high as 100-108 degrees are possible.

    - Isolated to scattered thunderstorms possible today and
      tomorrow, primarily across far north and west central
      Georgia.

Discussion:

Sensible weather through the next several days will be influenced
primarily by pervasive ridging at the mid-levels, with 500 dam
heights as much as 2-2.5 standard deviations above average for this
time of year. As this warm, moist airmass stagnates under increasing
subsidence, temperatures will begin to surge to well above average.
High temperatures today and tomorrow will be in the upper 80s to
upper 90s, with warmest conditions located to the south and east.
With ample moisture, expect heat index values to creep back over 100
through Saturday. A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8PM
tomorrow (Saturday) for portions of northeast, east central, and
southeast central Georgia for maximum heat index values as high as
105-108 degrees. Lows will be a few degrees warmer than average,
dropping into the mid-60s to mid-70s. Beginning today, expect each
subsequent day through midweek next week to be hotter and more
oppressive than the next.

A lobe of surface low pressure (currently given a 10% chance of
development by the National Hurricane Center) will continue to
meander westward along the Gulf coast, accompanied by a swath of
tropical moisture along its eastern flank. On top of that, as the
Bermuda high nudges westward and atop the Southeast, a steady stream
of south/southeasterly flow sets up across the Deep South. Chances
for afternoon showers and thunderstorms through Saturday will be
highest 1) across the western half of the area, in closest proximity
to richest moisture, and 2) for far north Georgia, where
orographically-enhanced convection is possible as the aforementioned
southerly flow treks over the southern Appalachians. Given more
progressive storm motions which should preclude any meaningful or
widespread flash flooding concerns, the primary hazards of note with
any storms that form will be frequent lightning and gusty winds
(perhaps to 40-45 mph).

Key Messages:

 - Dangerous heat is expected this weekend through at least next week,
   with significantly above normal temperatures and heat index
   values from 105 degrees to just above 110 degrees.

 - Warm overnight temperatures will do little to provide any relief
   from the heat.

 - Isolated coverage of thunderstorms each afternoon this weekend into
   early next week, with increasing chances by mid-week.

A 500 mb ridge (596-598 dm) will be centered over the Southeast on
Sunday, which will be the main driver of the sensible weather
through much of the long term period even as it gradually
retrogrades to the west. Subsidence underneath will contribute to
reduced rain chances and cloud cover, with only isolated
thunderstorms possible in the afternoon hours on Sunday and Monday.
With the lack of any steering or notable forcing mechanisms, the
evolution of diurnal precipitation will largely be determined by
local effects such as remnant outflows and the sea breeze. PoPs will
gradually increase on Tuesday through the end of the week as
troughing over the northeast CONUS causes the ridge to further
retrograde and return low level moisture to Georgia. A front is
furthermore anticipated to move southward through the Tennessee
Valley region towards north Georgia late in the week, which will
increase chances for showers and thunderstorms further.

Now that`s out of the way, the main story of the long term will be
the abnormal (even for late July) heat. The influence of the ridge
will continue to promote steady warming trend through the weekend
and into next week with increasing 1000-500 mb thicknesses and the
reduction in rain chances and dewpoints. On Sunday, high
temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid to upper 90s to the
north of I-85 (with the exception of the far northeastern mountains)
and into the upper 90s to low 100s to the south. Afternoon highs
will reach into the upper 90s to low 100s across the majority of the
forecast area on Monday and Tuesday. These high temperatures early
next week will range from 7-12 degrees above normal for late July.
Even erring on the lower side of dewpoint guidance and blending in
NBM10percent, heat index values will exceed 105 across the majority
of the forecast area each afternoon from Sunday through Wednesday.
Some locations could furthermore see heat index values reach 110
degrees (and Extreme Heat Warning criteria) from Monday through
Wednesday, most likely in portions of east and central Georgia.

Low temperatures will also be on the rise during the period,
climbing into the mid 70s to near 80 each morning early next week.
These lows will be between 7-12 degrees above normal for late July.
Unfortunately, this means that overnight relief from the heat will
be difficult to come by during this prolonged heat wave. This is
especially true in larger urban areas that will be slower to cool
off in the hours following sunset. Those with plans to spend time
outside this weekend and next week should be mindful of heat stress
and signs of heat exhaustion. Plan to wear light, loose fitting
clothing, hydrate frequently, and take frequent breaks in the shade
or indoors.
